sep 1, 1962 - James Meredith and the University of Mississippi

Description:

After an African-American man attempted to enroll at the university of Mississippi, chaos broke out on the campus resulting in two dead, hundreds wounded and many others arrested. 31,000 National Guardsmen and other federal forces were called in to enforce order. In an attempt to test the supreme court ruling Brown vs the Board of education, Meredith repeatedly applied to the school and after continuously being denied finally sued the university on racial discrimination. The case was ruled in Meredith’s favor and he became the first African American to attend the school on October 1, 1962.
