feb 1, 1960 - Woolworth's Lunch Counter Incident

Description:

All students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College, four young black men staged the first sit-in in Greensboro. The four students sat down at the lunch counter at the Woolworth’s where they couldn’t receive service because they weren’t white. Despite being denied service, they refused to give up their seats. Harassed by local racists and police, the students remained in their seats until the store closed. This protest started a mass protest of sit-ins across the south and eventually led to the integration of diners all over the south.
