Britains first settlement in North America. In 1584, the British hoped to establish a foothold in the Americas to expand their empire. They sent out Captain Philip Amada and Captain Arthur Barlowe to explore the area. They discovered Roanoke Island and met the local natives. They decided this would be a good place to establish a colony. However, it was not and the colony was unsuccessful because the unprepared English couldn't survive the harsh conditions.Added to timeline:
