jan 11, 1933 - Casas Viejas
Description:
Casas Veijas is a town in Andalusia, a region in Southern Spain. The anarchist movement had spread to Casas Viejas and in January of 1933, agricultural workers who were part of the CNT (Confederación Nacional del Trabajo) marched on the streets, declaring that they were starting a revolution. However, during the demonstration, two guards were wounded. The Civil Guard and Assault Guard arrived in the town on January 11. Many villagers fled, but many remained in the town and barracaded themselves in the home of anarchist Francisco Cruz Gutiérrez, which was set on fire under the command of Captain Rojas with the anarchists and their families still inside. Soldiers and police arrested anyone in the village who possessed a gun and shot them in the back. 24 people died during the incident. The massacre led to national outrage and the weakening of the revolutionary left in future elections, and the Socialists, who had once supported the government, began to withdraw from the new republic.
