jan 28, 1930 - Miguel Primo De Rivera Resigns
Description:
Primo De Rivera, who had been dictator since 1923, resigns because he realized he did not have the full support of the military or the king. Primo De Rivera rose to power because he held a military coup that the elites supported. They supported Primo De Rivera because he wanted to crush left-wing opposition and impose order upon Spain. The elites also believed that a strong leader like Primo De Rivera was necessary to do so. Primo De Rivera needed the support of the elites to be a successful dictator because they controlled large aspects of Spanish society and had a large influence over the Spanish people. Primo De Rivera's resignation lead to the formation of the Second Spanish Republic because the Spanish people were dissatisfied with their current government. Primo De Rivera had been replaced by another military dictator by the king, however, the king himself was losing support. This allowed left-wing political parties to band together to overthrow the government and declare a republic.
