mar 1, 1851 - Gold Discovered in Victoria

Description:

The Discovery of large quantities of gold brought on the Victorian Gold Rush. During the Gold rushes, a large number of Australian and foreign workers came to Victoria to make money from mining the Gold

Decent amounts of gold had already been found in Australia before the Gold Rush. Stories were told about the findings of gold but at first, people would not believe them. the Government made an effort to suppress the findings of Gold and kept them a secret because they believed it would reduce the workforce and destabilize the damage the Economy. they also did not want to lose track of convicts that have left to search for Gold

During the span of the Victorian gold rush Victoria had nearly the greatest output of gold than any other country in the world, second to only USA California. from 1851 to 1896 The Victorian mines department reported that a total of 61,000,000oz or 1,893,000 Kg of gold was found in Victoria.

Up unto this point, most of Australia's immigration or people living there were the Brittish and Brittish convicts and Australia (or Victoria) was still mostly a penal colony. The Australian Gold Rush helped Australia get on its feet as an independent country, because of a large number of people who were (actively choosing) to immigrate to Australia.

The Goldrush attracted many new immigrants and gave Victoria and Australia a massive population and economy boost. effectively changing the convict colonies to progressive cities with the influx of immigrants
