Benito Mussolini was an Italian political leader who became the fascist ruler of Italy from 1925 to 1945. Originally a ground-breaking socialist, he formed the paramilitary fascist movement in 1919 and became prime minister in 1922. This was called ‘Il Duce’ (the leader) by his nationals, Mussolini allied Hitler, relying on the German ruler to prop up his leadership during World War 2. Mussolini stood in a public poll as the fascist candidate lost in a social sweep. 2 days after, Mussolini was arrested for allegedly collecting arms to take over the government, but was released without charges the very next day. However, he was killed shortly after the German surrender in Italy in 1945.
