apr 14, 1931 - Establishment of the Second Republic
Description:
After a period of monarchy following the resignation of Miguel Primo de Rivera, King Alfonso XIII was forced to abdicate due to declining public support. Spain was declared to be a republic and held its first elections. A center-left government was established dominated by middle class liberal republicans and socialists. The new constitution guaranteed basic civil and political liberties which had been denied under the dictatorship, and established a democratic form of government.
