on the west side of the Mississippi in what is now Minnesota. Dr. Emerson took his slave along, but Fort Snelling was in territory from which slavery was banned by the Missouri Compromise. After arriving at the Fort, Dr. Emerson bought a slave woman named Harriet from an officer from Virginia. Dred and Harriet were married with their master's consent.
