JUN 2014-PRESENT: Current operation against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. ISIL, an even more radical offshoot of Al Qaeda, started rapidly gained power in 2013. They quickly grabbed territory in Iraq and Syria and began an oppressive regime built on terror and radicalism. In order to halt ISIL, the U.S. carried out airstrikes to destroy its fighting capabilities, targeting training facilities and economic centers in addition to supporting ground forces. As of August 9th, 2017, the U.S. and its allies have launched 24,566 airstrikes resulting in the degradation of ISIL’s combat ability and its ultimate decline in the Middle East
