aug 22, 1992 - Operation Southern Watch

Description:

The main purpose of this operation was to provide protection for minority groups living in Iraq after the Gulf War. Hussein’s regime specifically targeted the Kurds(a large but stateless ethnic group in the Middle East) and Shiite Muslims. To stop his regime from persecuting these groups, the U.S. and U.K. initiated “No-fly” zones over Southern Iraq. U.S. forces mainly had to deal with Iraqi Air defenses. This operation was later intensified to force Iraq to comply with U.N. weapons inspectors.
