aug 2, 1990 - Desert Sheild/Desert Storm begins

Description:

(1990-1991)Iraqi Dictator Saddam Hussein Invaded Kuwait after accusing them, along with Saudi Arabia, of siphoning oil from the Ar-Rumaylah oil fields which Iraq claimed it owned. The act was condemned by most of the world including many Arab States and on August 8th, a U.S.-led coalition initiated Operation Desert Shield. Operation Desert Shield was a military buildup in the Persian Gulf with the purpose of either convincing Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait or prepare for the impending NATO invasion. When Iraq refused to withdraw, the NATO coalition initiated Operation Desert Storm. Desert Storm began with an intensive bombing campaign that destroyed much of the Iraqi resistance forces. The following ground assault stopped with the surrender of Hussein’s Generals only 100 hours after it started.
