Before 1776 the united states of America were not one country it was all separate British colonies. On the 11th June five people were chosen to write to declare independence john Adams, Benjamin franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston and roger Sherman. The Continental Congress did not approve until the 4th of July. America was now one country from that day on.
