Four black college students are refused service and asked to leave a segregated lunch counter at a Woolworth store in Greensboro, N.C., but they remain seated. Their passive resistance inspires a movement. Hundreds of students at college campuses across the South, and eventually farther north, begin organizing sit-ins.
