Description:

The Beer Hall Putsch (also commonly known as Munich Putsch, German Bierkeller Putsch, Münchener Putsch, or Hitlerputsch) was an failed attempt made by Hitler, to take power of the Bavarian State Government (and thereby launch a larger revolution against the Weimar Republic). Hitler originally planned to storm Munich with the Nazi Party, planning to overtake the Government from the capital city. Upon news that the army (which was situated in Berlin) would actively defend the Government, Hitler was determined the march would go ahead. After hearing one of the largest political figures in Germany was scheduled to address a large crowd in the Bürgerbräukeller, one of the biggest beer halls in Munich. On November 8, 1923, Hitler took hundreds of his followers and surrounded the hall that evening. Hitler fired a shot into the ceiling and declared a “national revolution". The following day, the 9th November 1923, Hitler led a demonstration through the streets of Munich. He had approximately 2500,3000 supporters behind him, aiming to take over the war ministry building. The police immediately blocked there route, and violence erupted. 14 Nazi, and 4 police men died. Hitler was tried on February 26, 1924, and sentenced to five years in the Lands berg prison. Hitler’s popularity only increased during his trial, as his defense speeches were printed in the newspapers. He served less than a year of his sentence. During his stay, he wrote his famous memoir “Mein Kampf” (“My Struggle”). The Beer Hall Putsch was a turning point in Hitlers rise, and ultimately led to him gaining millions of followers, and a step closer to power.
