jan 10, 1920 - League of Nations

Description:

The League of Nations was an international organisation in charge of resolving conflicts between countries, disarmament and to prevent future world wars. The League failed and a couple decades later World War II broke out.

Causes
1. The League of Nations was part of the Treaty of Versailles. After the First World War the world’s economy and people could not withstand another World War anytime soon.
2. The League of Nations was also created to solve international conflicts before they turned into a war.

Effects
1. Whilst the League of Nations collapsed in the Second World War, it laid the groundwork for the United Nations. The United Nation was conceived during the Second World War under similar circumstances to the League of Nations. The two organisations had the same goal, “"to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security."
2. Before the League of Nations collapsed, they did solve many conflicts in the world. The League was successful in the Aaland Islands in 1921 where they was conflict between Finland and Sweden and who should govern the islands. A referendum took place deciding if the Upper Silesia would be part of Weimar Germany or Poland. The League settled it the dispute and both countries and the Upper Silesia accepted the outcome. In 1925, the League helped to resolve a border dispute between Greece and Bulgaria.
