oct 10, 1948 - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Description:

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was officially published by the United Nations in 1948, following the horrible crimes committed during the Second World War. They believed that the violation of fundamental human rights was the cause of the various war crimes and atrocities committed during the war.

As a human rights milestone, the UDHR is very important. This is because it is the first human rights declaration to be applied to every human being. It insists on its universality and the fundamental nature of each right included within it. Furthermore, UDHR has become the basis for subsequent human rights laws and treaties. Many states have used UDHR to establish their own human rights protections.

Furthermore, UDHR includes many positive rights that demonstrate a change from past human rights milestones. In particular, Article 25 states that everyone has the right to food, clothing, housing and other things necessary for a standard of living.
