jun 28, 1919 - The Treaty of Versailles

Description:

The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty produced at the Paris Peace Conference at the end of World War I. The treaty addressed issues such as territorial adjustments, reparations, armament restrictions, war guilt and the League of Nations. The winning nations signed the treaty and forced Germany to sign it and take full responsibility for the war.

Causes
1. The Treaty of Versailles was written because of World War I. It was made to determine post-war issues such as territorial changes, who would pay reparations, armament restrictions and war guilt. All these issues negatively impacted Germany.
2. The Treaty of Versailles was also written and signed to weaken and humiliate Germany’s military so that they could not start another war. This is because Germany was seen as a massive threat to Europe and the world.

Effects
1. As Germany was forced to sign the treaty without negotiation (although they tried to), it caused a lot of resentment and humiliation in the country. They knew that the war and damages were not entirely their fault and immediately hated the treaty. They also felt humiliated that the winning nations had so much power of Germany. The country was also unable to defend itself which made them vulnerable.
2. Italy was also annoyed by the treaty. When Italy entered the war the “Big 3” (Great Britain, France and the United States) promised Italy a great deal of land as part of the Secret Treaty of London, once the war ended. When it did end and the Treaty of Versailles was signed and Italy was not given the promised land, it caused a lot of unrest and anger. Unemployment rates also rise during this time in Italy.
