Territorial Governor George R. Carter proclaimed it Arbor Day. School children participated by singing songs, reciting poetry, making speeches and planting trees and shrubs on school grounds.
The first tree planted to commemorate Arbor Day was an ulu tree at McKinley High School on Oahu.
