mar 25, 1807 - Abolition of the Slave Trade Act

Description:

On March 1, 1807, President Thomas Jefferson signed a Congress-approved bill to ‘prohibit the importation of slaves into any port or place within the jurisdiction of the United States.” Three weeks later, the British House of Lords passed an act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. Neither country forced the immediate end of the international slave trade. In Britain, slavers had two months (until May 1) to comply with the new legislations and those who had already left British ports were exempted from the prohibition. They could, legally, land African slaves in the Americas for a year after the bill was passed. In the United States, it was only on January 1 that the American Act to ban slavery finally came into effect. Some of the most powerful and important images left behind by the protest against slavery were two different badges designed by Josiah Wedgwood and adapted by female protesters. These badges had images of a male or female slave kneeling in chains with the caption “Am I not a Man and a Brother?” or, for the women, “Am I not a Woman and a Sister?”.
