In January 1893, the planters staged an uprising to overthrow the Queen. The Hawaiians appealed to the U.S. for armed protection. The president did not approve and the marines stormed the islands and the American minister to the islands raised the American flag in the U.S. Grover Cleveland thought that Americans acted shamefully in Hawaii and he withdrew the annexation treaty immediately.Added to timeline:
