It was a race to the Yalu River (the boundary between Korea from China), in which MacArthur promised that by getting to the river first that all of the UN troops would be home by Christmas. However, undetected Chinese soldiers attacked the 250,000 men of the UN forces at night, forcing the UN troops to retreat hundreds of miles
