Description:
Johnson told the american public that on august 2, and 4, 1964, North Vietnamese torpedo boats had fired on two american destroyers that were patrolling on the Gulf of Tonkin(international water way). He called the attacks unprovoked. Johnson asked congress for permission to bomb North Vietnam. August 7, 1964, congress passed the gulf of Tonkin resolution which gave the president the authority to take all measures necessary.
