jan 1, 1832 - 1832 Nullification Crisis

Description:

The Nullification Crisis occurred as a result of high tariffs placed on imported goods. This made the southerners angry because they felt as if it only benefited the northern states whose primary income came from industrialization through factories and producing textiles (cloth). This angered the south because their primary income was still from agricultural, and this means that there was less demand for the south´s raw materials, but increased the final cost of cloth to the American people. The southern people took to Vice President John C. Calhoun (who was an initial supporter of the Tariff of 1816) to fix these ¨Tariffs of Abominations¨. With threats of secession from South Carolina, Calhoun proposed for the doctrine of Nullification that stated if a state found a federal law unconstitutional and detrimental to its sovereign interests that state would have the power to ¨nullify¨ that law within its borders. Morris (2017) History project S1. This is important because it shows the other side of the Civil war that it was not just started over the issue of slavery, but over the oppression of the central government.
