Description:

1)In 1834, the slave Dred Scott had been taken to Illinois, a free state, and then Wisconsin territory, where the Missouri Compromise of 1820 prohibited slavery. He then sued for his freedom.
1857 Supreme Court ruling claiming that African Americans "had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit." 2)Supreme Court was seemed as the highest authority of the country, so when it claimed that blacks were still property and people's property was protected by law, and the Missouri Compromise violated people's right of property and violated the constitution, the tension surrounding around the country in that time became worse.
