Description:

1)It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders (popular sovereignty). The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise. 2)The Act caused the violent incident "Bleeding Kansas" which worsened the situation. And popular sovereignty violated the Missouri Compromise, which had kept the Union from falling apart for the last thirty-four years. The Act also caused the end of the Whigs party.
