After the final parts of the pipeline had been sanctioned for construction the United States government set a deadline for the protesters to evacuate the area. This was particularly significant because it represents how the government even decides when the people's protests end. Anyone who stayed was arrested. This is not unlike when settlers first began taking land from the Indians, they lay their own terms and manipulated the system for their benefit.
