jan 1, 1887 - The Dawes Act
Description:
Prior to the Dawes Act, Indian land had been in the form of reservations. No individual owned the land. The Dawes Act allowed the United States Government to divide the land into individual ownership. Effectively dividing the people as well as making it more easy for them to take the then land. This made it easier for them to be incorporated into a 'civilized' lifestyle.
