nov 20, 1969 - The Occupation of Alcatraz
Description:
The occupation of Alcatraz was an important event in contemporary history. The land had previously belonged to native Americans before it had been turned into a prison by the United States Government. However, in 1969 a group of Indians traveled by boat to lay claim to the island. They were able to regain control of their rightful land and it was sent a huge message of protest to the rest of the area.
