Designed by John Backus. Backus wanted a better assembly language for IBM’s 704 mainframe computer, and was designed to make it easier to program a computer. Fortran comes from Formula Translator.
Designed by Remington Rand and developed by a team led by Grace Hopper. It was designed to work on UNIVAC I and II systems. MATH-MATIC is just the marketing name for it.
