Common Business-Oriented Language, or COBOL, is often regarded as the "first programming language".

Before the release of COBOL, computer programming was understandable by few, and mostly mathematicians dominated the industry. However, COBOL allowed programs to be written without knowledge of theoretical mathematics, opening the door to many new developers. Without the release of COBOL, most of the programs and operating systems we use today wouldn't have been possible.
