With the core worlds consolidated under the rule of earth and the belt opened for exploitation, hungry corporations on the home world gaze skyward for new vistas and opportunities. Long considered too distant for serious colonisation, in 2305 the Velria Corporation files for rights to begin settlement of the outer worlds, a move that many shareholders deem too risky to be sustainable. Yet, at a cost of billions, the project moves forward, with the Beta Class vessel “Proxima” slipping into orbit around Jupiter only a mere four years later, her spacious holds filled with prefabricated structures and equipment. With Europa set as the target destination, work teams began the process of digging through the surface ice, 30km thick, until they reach the rich hydro-carbon ocean beneath. Within a year the city of Mariana hangs from beneath the ice, ensconced in an atmospheric dome and ready for habitation. In the generations to come, this city will become the throne of the matriarchs.
