jan 1, 1958 - Separate Development
Description:
Hendrik Verwoerd (prime minister at the time) created a system called “separate development.” This system would split the black community in South Africa into 10 separate Bantu homelands (called Bantustans). This allowed the mostly-white government to say that the white population was the majority of the country (even if that wasn’t true). As well as helping prevent possible revolutions, as would be hard for the black community to unite when they live in separation from each other.
