jan 1, 2012 - Jennifer Douda Discovers
CRISPR-Cas9
Description:
Following her work in the mapping of the self-splicing ribozyme, Doudna discovered CRISPR while examining the bacterial immune system. She realized that the bacteria were effectively editing their own DNA to be able to defend against virus attacks. CRISPR was a revolution in the gene-editing field because it was easy and rarely cut in the wrong place because of the natural tags that it forms around the target area. In 2012 two research teams proved that Cas9 could cut any sequence that scientists wanted by changing the nucleotide sequence of CrRNA. (Live Science)
