may 30, 1854 - Kansas-Nebraska Act

Description:

In hopes of establishing a trans-continental railroad through the American Midwest, the Kansas-Nebraska act created the states of Kansas and Nebraska, which would decide through popular sovereignty whether to enter the Union as free or slave. Sectionalist elements on both sides took advantage of this clause and settled in Kansas to fight for their case, resulting in Bleeding Kansas.
