jan 1, 1854 - Bleeding Kansas

Description:

Also called the Border War, this was a conflict between pro-slavery and anti-slavery activists in Kansas. Though the state was authorized to choose whether it would be free or slave on its own behalf through popular sovereignty, settlers and combatants on both sides argued through open war and fraudulent voting which would result in dozens of deaths between 1854 and 1861. This conflict stemmed directly from sectionalism, northerners and southerners both fearing the downfall of their respective systems at the expense of honest law.
