apr 25, 1846 - Mexican-American War

Description:

When Mexico refused a U.S. purchase of what would later become the bottom portion of Texas, President Polk mobilized troops to the disputed border zone. Mexico attacked a fort in this zone, starting the Mexican-American war. As per the peace terms, the United States ceded what would later become states including Utah, New Mexico and California. California in particular brought about sectionalism, because it broke the parallel established by the Missouri Compromise.
