Description:

The Treaty of Nanjing marked the end of the first opium war. This treaty was the first of which were called the unequal treaties. The unequal treaties were unequal because the Chinese had no benefits from the signed treaties. The treaty of Nanjing opened up Chinese ports for free trade. Opium was imported into China by the British without any restrictions. Hong Kong became a British colony that extends Great Britians influence within China. China had several obligations to Britain, however Great Britain no obligations. Through this treaty Great Britain was able to extend its political reach in china and the world.
