jul 21, 1861 - 1st Battle of Bull Run

Description:

Goals: McDowell lead his unseasoned army across Bull Run for a surpise attack on the confederate flank, the Confederates had been planning to attack the Union left flank but were disadvantaged.
Leaders:
Union: Irvin McDowell
Confederacy: P. G. T. Beauregard, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson
Results: The Union was disorganized and gave the confederates time to bring in reinforcements, with which they won a slight victory, however they were too disorganized to pursue the retreating Union troops. The battle signified that the war was going to be much longer and bloodier than they previously thought (the Union thought it would be a quick victory).
