jan 1, 1609 - Anselm Boetius de Boodt
Description:
1609 Anselm Boetius de Boodt, physician to Rudolph II wrote Gemmarum et Lapidum Historia (History of Gems and Stones) - contempt for medical and magical properties ascribed to stones because these were supported by those selling/trading the stones. De Boodt gives a description of how false gems are made, because he says it's an important part of being able to ID them; he includes recipes including from Giovanni Battista Della Porta's Natural Magic - coloured crystals for emeralds; Secrets of Alessio Piemontese - for pastes to imitate stones, based on grinding up of stones.(see Dupré)
