Once in class i sit down and open up my Nike backpack. Nike is an American Clothing company that operates out of the United States of America while producing all its products in third world countries such as Thailand. My backpack specifically was manufactured was Bangladesh. This is impacted by globalization though economical and environmental factors. NIke’s choice to produce goods in third world countries is also an example of cost-cutting methods because materials and labour are both significantly cheaper in countries like Thailand compared to countries like Canada. In addition to that cheaper labour Nike’s factories also produce lots of waste by-products such as rubber and glue. These by-products are released and left alone in nearby villages, as we learned from the documentary on Nike seen in class. The chemicals and toxic material affect near-by water sources and pollute the air with toxins as well, in turn promoting global warming and harming the neighbouring residents.
