jan 21, 1961 - James Meredith Applies for University of Mississippi
In January 1961, inspired by Kennedy's inaugural address, James Meredith applies as the first black student to the University of Mississippi. This action cause riots at the campus and threats from the Ku Klux Klan. Two people were killed and hundreds of soldiers and protestors were injured. Despite these protests, James was eventually enrolled.
