jan 1, 1892 - diminishing birth rates: Smallpox & major conflict
Description:
The reasons for which the Belgian authorities decided to populate Leopoldville with Bangala pertained to ethnic stereotyping and favouritism, as well as diminishing birth rates among the Bateke (Liebrechts 1909, 195–200; Samarin 1989a, 137). This was in part due to a smallpox epidemic, but also to a major conflict between Bateke and the colonial authorities in 1892
