Description:

The Compromise of 1850 was a compromise between the north and south. California would be added to the union as a free state, but the fugitive slave law would be strengthened. The slave trade would be illegal in Washington DC, but you could still own slaves.
This helped lead to sectionalism because there was a new western state that did not have slavery.
