President Xi Jinping visited the Philippines on Tuesday for the first time since President Duterte came into power in 2016. The visit was to help further strategic gains made by Duterte, who previously declared a reorientation of Philippine foreign policy away from the US and towards China. However, Duterte is facing criticisms for making too many political concessions to China in return for billions of dollars in Chinese loans and investments that have yet to materialise. Despite Duterte's claim that there was a deepening of trust and confidence in China’s involvement in his 'Build, Build, Build' infrastructure program, only 4 of 38 projects were among the commitments made on Tuesday. Duterte’s management of China issues has frustrated nationalists and the public, where 84% of citizens felt that it was wrong not to oppose China’s militarisation of the South China Sea.
