oct 18, 2018 - THIRD MEETING OF THE CHINA-PHILIPPINES BILATERAL CONSULTATION MECHANISM ON THE SOUTH CHINA SEA (BCM)

Description:

China and the Philippines held their third BCM on October 18 in Beijing, which continued to serve as a venue for both Manila and Beijing to discuss their ongoing maritime issues. The Chinese delegation was led by Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou and the Philippine delegation was led by the Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Policy Enrique A. Manalo. Of the topics discussed, one of key interest was cooperation on jointly exploring and developing offshore oil and gas, with respects to each other’s sovereignty and territorial claims. Additionally, both sides acknowledged the importance of the BCM as a venue for enhanced and regular dialogue and reaffirmed their commitment to cooperating to find ways forward to strengthen mutual trust and confidence while reiterating that the maritime issues were not the sum total of its bilateral relations. Both sides considered the meeting to have been fruitful and productive.
