What is the age of the earth and the universe?

Scientists estimate that the earth is about 4 billion years old and that the universe was born 13 to 14 billion years ago. The Bible sets no date for the creation of the universe. In no place does it affirm that the earth is only a few thousand years old. The very first verse in the Bible reads: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) That general statement allows scientists to determine the age of the physical world according to sound scientific principles.
