dec 10, 1936 - Abdication of Edward VIII of England

Description:

As king and head of the Church of England, remarriage was at the time strictly forbidden. Edward's proposal to Wallis Simpson, who had divorced her first husband, and was pursuing the divorce of her second, lead therefore to widespread disapproval. Instead of giving up the proposal, Edward chose to abdicate, leaving the throne for his younger brother Albert (who became George VI).
