Senate Representative Preston Brooks attacked Senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist, with a walking cane in retaliation for a speech given by Sumner two days earlier in which he fiercely criticized slavery.This showed sectionalism in the nation by showing the hatred was so high that a Southern Representative beat a Northern Representative.
