mar 3, 1820 - Missouri Compromise
Description:
The Missouri Compromise was a very controversial thing at the time. This was significant because Missouri applied for statehood. If it had become a state it would cause an unbalance between the slave states and free states. In order to prevent this, they decide that Missouri would become a slave state while Maine would become a free state. This caused sectionalism because the compromise came with the 36 30 line. This line meant that all states below the line would become slave states and all states above would be free. This contributed greatly to sectionalism by creating a literal line of division between the North and South.
